Barnstorming!
(with photos)
The barns of Newtown dot the countryside by the dozens, serving as a reminder
of the way life used to be. Winter lays bare the outlines of these fine old
buildings.
The Bee recently took a barnstorming photo tour of some of the more photogenic
barns in town.
In the book An Age of Barns , author Eric Sloane dedicated his work to
America's men and women who dedicated their lives to completing their chores
on the farm.
"He had a reverence for excellence, a reverence so profound that all things he
did, he did well. America's landscape is still dotted with his monuments,"
Sloane wrote.
The author, a former resident of Kent who has since died, said those seeking
the spirit of America might do well to look in the countryside "for it was
there that the spirit was born."
"We have finally come to realize the beauty and excellence of the homes built
by the early Americans, but too often their barns are regarded as mere
curiosities," Sloane wrote. "They are, rather, the shrines of a good life and
ought to be remembered."
