Florence Kangos

Florence Kangos, 86, of Newtown, formerly of Jackson, N.J., wife of Nicholas Kangos, died August 31, at her residence. She was born in Queens, N.Y., on May 30, 1931, a daughter of Edna (Sterloff) and George Nickolaus.

She resided with her family in the Washington Heights section of New York, attending Washington High School and graduating from the Katharine Gibbs School of New York City.

Mrs Kangos was a private secretary with the Oil American Petroleum Institute of New York prior to her marriage and the birth of their three children.

A Newtown area resident for the past five months, coming from Jackson, she also resided in Holmdel, N.J., and was a member of the Kimisis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church of Holmdel.

Mrs Kangos enjoyed sports and was a champion bowler, golfer, and bocce player. She was a former volunteer at the Bayshore Community Hospital and later became a secretary to the director of volunteer services.

Her loved ones say she will be sorely missed.

In addition to her husband Nicholas of 63 years, her children and their spouses, Jon J. and Christine Kangos of Atlantic Highlands, N.J.; George S. and Rebecca Kangos of North Andover, Mass.; and Caryn K. and Frederick  Flannery, Jr, of Danbury survive her. She is also survived by a brother, Anthony Nickolaus of Florence, Ore.; a sister, Anna Haikalis of Chevy Chase, Md.; five grandchildren, Timothy and wife Samantha, Steven, Nicole, Jennifer, and Frederick III; a sister-in-law, Katie Nickolaus; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, her brother, Nicholas Nickolaus, predeceased her.

The family will receive friends at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 30 Clapboard Ridge Road, Danbury, on Tuesday, September 5, from 10:30 to 11:30 am.

The Rite of Burial will then take place in the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church at 11:30 am. Interment will follow in St Peter Cemetery, Danbury.
