Career Center Lists Scholarships

Information and applications for the following scholarships have arrived in the Newtown High School Career Center. For a complete list of scholarships available, check out the scholarship file in the Career Center. Call Mrs McEvoy at 426-1915 with any questions.

2003 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards/National Association of Secondary School Principals –– This is for high school students (any grade) who have an outstanding involvement in a volunteer community service activity performed at least in part after September 1, 2001. Newtown High School will select one student to go on to state level judging and only they will be notified shortly after November 7. The top volunteer in each state will receive $1,000, a trip to Washington, D.C., and a silver medallion. Once in Washington, the top ten will win an additional $5,000. Application must be returned to the Career Center by Thursday, October 31.

2002-2003 Principals Leadership Award –– An award is for high school seniors who are in the top 20% of their class and who demonstrate leadership. This year the program will award 150 scholarships of $1,000 each. Only one student from Newtown High School may be nominated. Applications and instructions are in the Career Center. All entries must be returned to Mrs McEvoy in the Career Center by November 15.

Nestle Very Best In Youth Award –– Cosponsored by Nestle USA and Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), this award honors young people between the ages of 9 and 18 who are avid readers, have a strong academic record, and have made contributions to the quality of life in their schools, churches, or communities. Each winner will receive a trip to Los Angeles, Calif., with his/her parent or legal guardian to attend an Awards Ceremony in July 2003. Round trip airfare, hotel accommodations for four nights and $600 spending money will be included. Nestle will also donate $1,000 in each winner’s name to the charity of his/her choice. Applications must include two letters of recommendations, transcripts, and consent form. Applications are available in the Career Center and the deadline is November 15.

The 2002 Hispanic Heritage Celebration –– The Connecticut National Guard and the United States Post Office is sponsoring a scholarship for students of Hispanic Heritage between the ages of 10 and 18. These students must have a high level of academics, an outstanding school attendance record, and be actively involved in school or community. The recipients will be awarded a $100 Savings Bond and an invitation and recognition during the Annual Hispanic Celebration on October 18. Applications must be postmarked by September 27.

Coca Cola Scholars Program –– Recognizes outstanding high school seniors who balance extracurricular activities with strong academic performances. The applicants must be planning to pursue a degree at an accredited US post-secondary institution and have a minimum 3.00 GPA. Each year 50 scholarships of $20,000 and 200 scholarships of $4,000 are awarded. Applications may be made apply online at www.coca-colascholars.org before October 31 or applications may be picked up in the Career Center.

Arts Recognition and Talent Search (ARTS) –– The National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts provides the opportunity for 17- and 18-year-old artists to qualify to participate in the ARTS week. This program is available to artists developing their careers in dance, jazz, music, theater, voice, writing, visual arts, photography, film and video. Students have the opportunity to earn cash awards up to $3,000 each. Those selected for the Music for Youth Award will receive $25,000. Applications are available in the Career Center or apply online at www.nfaa.org/application/apply_national.htm. The deadline for applications is October 1.

2003 United States Senate Youth Program/W.R. Hearst Foundation Scholarship Competition –– Each year, two elected student body officers are selected to represent Connecticut during the week’s internship in Washington, D.C., and to be the guest of the state’s senators. In addition, each delegate will receive a $5,000 William Randolph Hearst Foundation scholarship. A high school junior or senior is eligible if he or she currently holding a position in student government, student council, or a civic organization. Only two candidates can be nominated from each school. Return applications to Mrs McEvoy in the Career Center by September 30. More information is available in the Career Center.
