A Barbaric Practice Continues

To the Editor:

One week ago on Sunday morning three men arrived at our home in hunting apparel and asked me if they could track a deer one of them wounded with an arrow hunting in the woods between Gelding Hill Road and Bennetts Bridge Road.

I told them yes since I wanted the deer to be found and put out of its misery.

We could not find the wounded animal, and they left the area.

I think it is barbaric to hunt with bow and arrow even though I know many do so, and we are not against hunting with rifles or shotguns in unpopulated areas.

I am confident that these hunters did not have written permission to hunt on the private property in this area, and they were from Wolcott as well, so how could they?

There have been many yearlings born this year, and I believe that the many hunters would have no compunction to kill a mother deer still nursing her young, since deer continue to nurse until they loose their spots. Please do not think that the deer they are killing are for food pantries or for starving children!

There is a constant drum beat concerning the Lyme disease problem in Fairfield County, with the people who frankly care more about their flowers than the animals who inhabit this area.

I suffered from Lyme disease, so I understand how terrible it is.

However, 100 mg of doxy twice a day, will cure 90 percent of the problem.

I also shudder to think of a hunt to cull the herd with rifles and shotguns.

I think people will cower in their homes with their children and pets if hunting is allowed in Newtown.

Please be aware of hunters this time of year in town, and make sure that they keep off our property!

Thank you,

Neil & Doris Ratner
