Boys’ Soccer Team Finally Falls, But Rebounds

Newtown High School’s boys’ soccer team rebounded from its first loss of the campaign, a 2-0 setback at Joel Barlow of Redding on September 29, to blank visiting New Fairfield 6-0 at Blue & Gold Stadium on Monday.

Newtown got two goals apiece from Patrick Riccardi and Charlie Poarch, and net-finders off the cleats of Nick Barreto and Bajraliu. Blake Jarvis, Nathan Kalra, Matthew Mossbarger, and Logan Puleri all had assists.

The Nighthawks played visiting Weston to a 1-1 tie at the Stadium on September 27. Kalra scored a goal assisted by Wesley Morlock.

The Hawks had 10-2 advantage in shots. They carried a 4-1-2 record into the end of the week.

NHS players recently wore black arm bands in memory of Jill Mossbarger, mom of Matthew, his older brother and former Newtown soccer player Mike, and their sister and NHS soccer player Katie. Jill Mossbarger died as a result of complications with cancer on September 19.

The Hawks go to Bunnell of Stratford, New Milford, and Brookfield, before finally returning home to face Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport on October 13.
