The summer flag on the Main Street flagpole will stay in place for one more week.

Newtown Lions Club, which works with Keeper of the Flag Chris Gardner to schedule the changing of the flag on the landmark each spring and autumn, has announced a change of plans. The club, Gardner, and Newtown Hook & Ladder Volunteer Fire Co. #1 firefighters had planned to lower the summer flag on Saturday, October 7, at 8 am, replacing it at that time with the smaller winter flag.

Due to expected inclement weather, however, the Lions have advised us that the changeover has been postponed.

The flags are now scheduled to be changed out on Saturday, October 14, at 8 am.

The public is invited to watch the event. Sidewalks along Main Street provide a safe place for all to gather and watch the traditional event.

A note within the October 6, 2023 print edition of The Newtown Bee, within Top of the Mountain, could not be changed before the paper went to press this morning. We join the Lions in apologizing for any confusion that may cause.
