To the Editor:

Election day is next Tuesday November 8. Do you have a plan to get out and vote?

There is much at stake in this election. Many are trying to distract from the existential challenges we are facing. Across the United States, there are candidates running who are willing to undermine our country’s institutions for self-gain.

We see election deniers who will not accept the results of their own races if they lose, those who support or turned a blind eye to January 6 insurrectionists, and those who think limiting minority populations’ access to the ballot box is a legitimate political strategy to advance their extreme agenda.

If you need an example, look no further than the Republican candidate looking to represent Connecticut in the US Senate. She publicly declared her allegiance to Donald Trump.

We hear a lot about the economy as a top issue for voters. However, inflation is a global challenge right now, not just something happening in the US and many republican candidates are not presenting any solutions to address this. Pointing to a problem without identifying tangible action should not win votes.

Nobody likes paying more for basic goods, but it’s unclear how any of these politicians are going to fix this global issue, which has been exacerbated by a war being fought in Ukraine. At least our current administration has passed legislation to reduce costs for Americans, notably with limited to no republican support.

The people of Ukraine are fighting for their sovereignty and despite this ongoing, unprovoked, brutal battle, Gallup reported Ukrainians are feeling hopeful. They understand what is at stake.

As Americans, we can learn from Ukrainian’s focus, determination, and sacrifice. Are we willing to put our institutions, freedoms, and ideals first? If so, we must go out and vote for candidates who will defend them!

Our problems are the result of the current administration’s decisions. And we should never look to Ukraine for inspiration.
