Relocated NOMAD Festival Will still Present Global Folk Traditions

NEW HAVEN â The 18th annual NOMAD Festival will take place Friday through Sunday, November 4-6.

NOMAD â or NOrtheast Music, Art and Dance â is a festival of traditional folk music and dance of North America, the British Isles, continental Europe, the Middle East and beyond. Over 100 musicians, dance teachers and singers, hailing from Maine to Washington, D.C., will gather at Wilbur Cross High School to share their talents and knowledge of the performing folk arts with over 1,000 enthusiastic visitors.

The festival originated in Newtown, but moved a few years ago after it outgrew its available space at the high school and middle school.

NOMAD attendees will enjoy concerts of American, British, Irish, and Scottish folk music, sea songs, eastern European harmonies, cowboy songs, singalongs, rounds, shape-note singing, Scandinavian music, string band and bluegrass music, klezmer music and much more. Musicians will be interested in the workshops in a variety of folk instruments and the opportunities for impromptu jamming.

Dance enthusiasts can watch or participate in folk dances including English and Scottish country dancing, international dancing, Colonial dancing, Israeli, French, Italian, Scandinavian, vintage dancing, Morris dancing and more. Square and contra dance fans will find almost continuous opportunities to participate. Beginning dancers are welcome at NOMAD and it is not necessary to bring a partner.

NOMAD is a festival for all ages. A folk bazaar will offer a variety of handcrafts, books, recordings and related items, and food vendors will be set up.

The festivities will begin with a contra dance on Friday night.

The festival will run from 8 to 10:30 pm (contra dance only) on Friday, 10 am to 11 pm on Saturday, and 11 am to 5 pm on Sunday.

Admissions on Saturday and Sunday ranges from $15 to $40 for adults depending on hours of attendance. There are lower rates for seniors, visitors under age 18 and children 5 and under. Admission for Friday nightâs dance is $8.

I am sorry but $88.8 million dollars to educate 4030 kids is way out of line! That's over $22k per kid, used to be $8k per kid, the kids aren't getting any smarter, the administration eats all the cost. Time to cut the budget by 20% and also cut the $225k salary of the superintendent and $193k of the superintendent assistant ! You can get a lot of teachers for $400k wasted for 2 overpaid positions. Common sense should tell you that spending $2.5 million per every week for population less than 30k people is just way too high! Also voting should be done by mail, enough with these nonsensical referendums where barely 16% of voters show up. 51% voters approval should be MANDATED!

Encouraging. The town budget squeaks by but the school budget got dinged. Let the games begin.

Who have you asked that didn't know where to cut? Its easy. Ideally, you would start with section 100 of the budget but the union prevents that. So I say you turn to page 18, put it on your dart board, and start reducing the head count. It's all you can do when the union controls the budget.

The people have spoken, time to sharpen your pencils. If we look at the town budget for guidance the BOE should cut the budget from 4.4% to 2.75% I find the voting results very interesting ... We have approximately 4,030 students in our town, with a published 12:1 ratio which means we have 335 teachers. I would love to know the actual number if someone knows. If we account for their spouses that gets us very close to the number of people who voted yes for the budget and wished it would be higher (729).
