Mary Zamary (nee Whittemore), of Trumbull, Conn., died peacefully on November 4, 2022. One of five children, Mary was born on May 23, 1934, in Danbury, to the late John and Sadika Zamary. She is predeceased by siblings Anna Matthews, Joseph Zamary, and John Zamary.

She is survived by her brother, Albert Zamary, of Trumbull; daughter, Anna, and son-in-law, Gary, and grandsons, Michael, James, and Patrick, of Newtown.

Mary was a proud first-generation Syrian-American and an active member of both St Nicholas (Bridgeport) and St George (Danbury) Orthodox Churches. In her earlier life, she served as one of the first female supervisors at Sikorsky Aircraft in the 1950s and 1960s. She later was the leader of her daughter’s PTA at Tracey Elementary School in Norwalk, Conn. Mary was always an ardent supporter of women’s and children’s rights and opportunities.

To her adoring grandsons, Mary was known to them lovingly as “Sitti,” the Arabic translation for grandmother. She was a beloved Auntie Mary to a multitude of nieces, nephews, and their families, including: Kathy Buzel, David Matthews, Michael Matthews, Jack Zamary, Mark Zamary, Matt Zamary, Michelle Mirmina, Mary McNelis, and Denice Burns. She was a wonderful cook, generous friend, and could insert a clever and funny remark into any situation. She had a special gift for having — and giving — a good laugh. Her warm sense of humor and easy smile were her calling cards. She will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your local food pantry. Mary’s most special times were sharing good food with the people she loved. On behalf of her family, please take time to enjoy the same with you and yours.
