Newtown’s annual rabies clinic inoculated about 120 dogs and cats last Sunday, the smallest number since the service began 15 years ago.

“It was the lowest amount we’ve ever had,” Town Clerk Cynthia Simon said. “I don’t know why. I don’t know if people are becoming complacent, or what is causing the numbers to drop.”

The most dogs and cats inoculated at the clinic were 669 in 1991. Last year there were 125. Most of the animals receive three-year vaccinations.
