Ed Ink: ...And Speaking Of Open Space
State Representative Julia Wasserman announced this week that the State of
Connecticut has decided to convey another 21.6 acres of Fairfield Hills
property to the Town of Newtown -- not for commercial development, not for
town offices, not for any practical purpose at all. The land is being given to
the town primarily for its soul-soothing properties.
The narrow ribbon of open space stretches nearly a mile along the meandering
reaches and ravines of Deep Brook from the area of Watertown Hall to its
confluence with the Pootatuck River. The parcel includes some of the prettiest
scenery of the whole 650-acre Fairfield Hills campus. It will provide
townspeople a getaway greenway right through the heart of our growing town.
This additional gift of land from the state to Newtown is the result of years
of consultations between Rep Wasserman and the state officials charged with
finding new uses for the former state mental hospital at Fairfield Hills. Once
again, we find ourselves thanking Mrs Wasserman for her work on the town's
behalf in the complicated evolution of Fairfield Hills and for her political
skill in preserving the farmland and open space there.
