Anita I. Watson Estate At Pennypacker

SHILLINGTON, PA. -- The third of four auctions offering the estate of Anita I.

Watson of Chambersburg was held by the Pennypacker-Andrews Auction Centre,

Inc, on January 24.

Watson was a noted antiques dealer and collector. Cathy Pennypacker-Andrews

estimated attendance at 500/600 people, with 333 registered bidders. Buyers

from at least 12 states participated. Approximately 1,500 lots were offered

for a gross of $200,000-plus.

Starring as the highest price in the sale, an oil on canvas by Ben Austrian

depicting hens and chicks, measuring 20 by 26 inches, went to a private

collector on the floor at $33,000. It was thought by the auction house to be a

record.

A Kentucky flintlock long rifle with a brass patch reached $10,560; a softwood

two drawer farm table, early 1800s, in an oblong shape, having pedestal feet,

brought $10,120 from a private buyer; a high chest of six graduated drawers in

mixed woods fetched $4,730; a rounded front leaded glass curio cabinet with

shelves, having a carved crest, fetched $4,620; and a red stained bucket bench

went out at $5,610.

A 12-pane softwood corner cupboard sold at $4,840; a softwood corner cupboard

with two arched glass doors over two drawers over two cupboard doors, in two

parts, having replaced doors and painted with gold accents, reached $1,870; a

J.A. Gorgas (American) broken arch grandfather clock from Ephrata was

purchased at $5,720; and an Enterprise double wheel coffee grinder reached

$1,485.

A William Oberly (Womelsdorf, Pennsylvania) red and blue coverlet achieved

$3,300; a Kreiner coverlet reached $2,035; a Meily coverlet went for $1,595;

and an unsigned coverlet sold at $880. A 17¬ inch lone rounded corner oblong

shaped platter with a hand applied leaf design reached $1,540; a paint

decorated armchair went out at $2,090; a two part bookcase/secretary desk was

purchased at $2,750; and unsigned redware soap dishes achieved $2,750 and

$3,300.

An unsigned oil on canvas of a girl at a well achieved $1,980; an oil on

canvas of a nude brought $1,430; a Christopher Shearer oil on canvas sold at

$1,870; and an L.J. Cruise oil on canvas went out at $1,210.

Auctioneers were Cathy M. Pennypacker-Andrews of Reading, and Mike R. Witman

of Manheim.

Prices quoted reflect a 10 percent buyers premium.
