WestConn To Host “Terrorism And The Bill Of Rights” Forum

DANBURY — Trying to make sense of what remains incomprehensible for so many, WestConn will host the free “Terrorism and Bill of Rights” forum at 7 pm on Wednesday, November 14, in the Student Center Theater, Midtown Campus, 181 White Street.

Dr Averell Manes, associate professor of social science/political science at WestConn, will moderate the discussion, which was prompted by the terrorist attacks of September 11.

“As soon as the attack happened, I wanted to convene a forum, but we decided to wait until we saw where the military action would take it,” Manes said. “We all need to have some time to talk about this. This is a very good opportunity as things have become more complicated with the anthrax scare.”

Lt Gov M. Jodie Rell is tentatively scheduled to be among the forum’s panelists. WestConn professors Dr Michael Foley, associate professor of justice and law administration; Dr Harold Schramm, professor of English and justice and law administration; Dr Carina Bandhauer, professor of political science; and Dr Chris Kukk, professor of sociology, will round out the distinguished panel.

Each of the WestConn panelists brings related expertise to the forum. Dr Foley, who has a background in the FBI, will talk about the threat of domestic terrorism. Dr Schramm will discuss civil liberties and to what extent Americans will go to maintain security at home. Dr Bandhauer will address the race and ethnic implications, as well as the origins of the conflict. Dr Kukk will explore the international viewpoints.

Lt Gov Rell, who has lived in Brookfield since 1968, was elected lieutenant governor in 1994 and was reelected to another four-year term in 1998. In her current capacity, she has direct knowledge of the impact the tragedy has had on Connecticut.

Refreshments will be served at the event. For more information, contact Dr Manes at 837-8452.
