SALEM, MASS. â An English ivory pique pomander cane that brought $28,000 led Tradewinds. Antiquesâ 30th semiannual all-cane live auction at the Salem Waterfront Hotel on April 21. The sale grossed $401,044, the third highest in the companyâs history.
The auction was preceded by a private preview the night before with an illustrated lecture by Barbara Staples, author and expert on the Boston Post cane, who spoke on âThe Everlasting Life of the Boston Post Cane.â
Auction highlights include a scarce California gold quartz cane that made $12,880, while another English pique in a rare form fetched $11,760. A rope carved whale ivory on whalebone achieved $10,640, while a detailed ivory Buffalo Bill found $8,960.
Other offerings included a Tiffany monkey, which brought $8,400, as did an ornate Indian potentateâs cane, as well as a rare Austrian violin. A menacing French âLa Terribleâ curio fetched $7,840, while an early silver cane dated 1700 and a fully carved whalebone nautical both made $7,280.
An Aquarelist cane brought $6,720, while a Damascene egg and claw and an ivory Cavalier each made $6,440. There were fine offerings in all price ranges.
All prices reported include a 12 percent buyerâs premium.
Tradewindsâ next event will be its midsummer online auction beginning on July 24. A live auction on September 29 will celebrate the firmâs 15th year of conducting cane auctions.
