Wild Things At Christies's South Kensington

W/1 Cut

LONDON, ENGLAND -- Christie's South Kensington's fifth wildlife art sale will

be Friday, April 24, at 10:30 am. The firm will introduce two selected sales

this year, resulting in a reduction of the number of lots offered. April's

auction will include a selection of paintings, watercolors, drawings and

sculpture dating from 1700 to the present day with estimates ranging from œ500

to œ50,000.

One of the highlights will be "Giant Panda" (1985) by Robert Bateman (b.

1930), painted on acrylic (est œ25/30,000).

A single-owner collection of oil paintings of animals in a traditional

landscape, commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria, will also be included. The

artist, Urs Eggenschwiler, was appointed official sculptor for the

confederation after the king's death and was renowned for his paintings of the

wildlife of Central Africa. Estimates range from œ3,000 to œ10,000.

In keeping with the Year of the Tiger, a selection of the lots feature tigers

in various forms. One in particular is an oil on canvas by Wilhelm Frey,

(1826-1911) entitled "Tiger on a Mountain' (est œ6/8,000). Three works by the

British sculptor Mark Coreth will include a half life size "Loping Leopard"

(est œ10,5/15,500). "Two Fighting Lionesses" (est œ6/8,000) and a "Tiger Bust"

(est œ11,5/18,500).

Craig Bone (b. 1955) from Zimbabwe will be represented by three pieces in the

sale, "Jaguar on the Prowl" (est œ14/18,000), "Tigers at Play" (est

œ20/30,000) and "Elephants at Mana" (est œ20/30,000). Work by Basil Ede, bird

artist, and Trevor Boyer, as well as works of Nineteenth Century artists

Wilhelm Kuhnert, Arthur Wardle and Archibald Thorburn; Twentieth Century

artists Carl Brenders and Paul Augustineus; and sculpture by Jonathan

Kenworthy will also be offered.

The sale of two canvases, one "Jewels of Africa," depicting two rhinos, the

other, "Mogul of India" of an Indian tiger (18 by 6.5 feet) by Omra Sian, (est

œ25/35,000 each) will benefit the protection of endangered species. Christie's

South Kensington will also continue its association with the World Wide Fund

for Nature (WWF). The second sale will be October 15.
