The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference announced seedings and brackets for soccer, field hockey, and volleyball high school state tournaments.

They're champs for the second year in a row. Back to back thanks to a sister to sister scoring combination, Newtown High School's girls' soccer team captured the South-West Conference championship with a 2-1 double overtime victory over Notre Dame-Fairfield, at neutral site Joel Barlow, on a cold November 6 night.

Through 17-plus games, Newtown High School’s field hockey team went unbeaten. Fourth-seeded New Milford needed overtime to get it done but gave the top-seeded Nighthawks their first taste of defeat.

The third time was the charm for the Newtown High School girls’ soccer team. After a pair of early-season meetings between the Nighthawks and Pomperaug of Southbury Panthers yielded a tie and Panther win, Newtown came through when it mattered most.

Newtown High School’s girls’ volleyball team dropped a hard-fought five-set match to host New Milford in the South-West Conference tournament quarterfinals on November 4.

The teams had to wait a day to play due to wind-related road closures the day after a Halloween night storm, but did not have to wait long for the first touchdown.Beginning with an opening-minute score, Newtown High School’s football team had its way in a 38-0 victory over visiting Stratford, at Blue & Gold Stadium, on November 2.

The top-seeded Newtown High School field hockey team shut out eighth-seeded Joel Barlow of Redding 6-0 in the South-West Conference Tournament quarterfinals at Blue & Gold Stadium on November 2.

Newtown High School’s girls’ soccer team scored twice in the first 11 minutes and change and held off the host Masuk Panthers for a 2-1 victory in the South-West Conference tournament quarterfinals on November 1.

Due to an overnight storm that has left many roads in Newtown closed after trees and/or wires fell in high winds and rain, Newtown schools have been closed for the day. As a result, many athletic events that had been scheduled for today have been rescheduled.
