George A. (Thanes) Athanas

George A. (Thanes) Athanas, 83, of Bridgeport, beloved husband of the late Rita (Ligouri) Athanas, died January 13, at St Vincent’s Medical Center, Bridgeport.

He was the father of Audrey Athanas of Newtown.

Born in Korce, Albania, he was the son of the late Anthony and Cile (Ceco) Athanas, and had been a Bridgeport resident for 75 years. He was a retired assembler for Sikorsky Aircraft, where he had worked for many years. Mr Athanas was a devoted husband and father who embraced his family, his heritage, and his church with great pride.

 Survivors also include his other devoted children, Jeanette Alston and her husband, Russell, of Monroe, and Betty and Peter Athanas, both of Bridgeport; a sister, Pauline George and her husband, William, of Bridgeport; two granddaughters, Sarah Notar and Erin Alston; a great grandson, Jonathan Avila; and several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Mr Athanas was predeceased by a brother, Theodore Thanes.

Funeral services were held January 17, in St George Albanian Orthodox Church, with Archpriest Sergei C. Bouteneff officiating. A memorial service was held on January 16 in the funeral home.

The Commerce Hill Funeral Home, 4798 Main Street, Bridgeport, was in charge of arrangements.
