Hawley PTA Kicks Off Reflections Program

The Hawley Parent Teacher Association (PTA) kicked off the Reflections program themed, “I Wonder Why,” on November 3, with 52 students attending a workshop held in the school gym. The program offers students the opportunity to create works of art for fun and recognition. Students are encouraged to create and submit works of art in four categories: literature, musical composition, photography, and the visual arts. Eighteen pieces of art and creative writing works were entered from 16 students between the ages of 5 to 9.

A panel of judges from the Newtown area met recently to choose one entry per age division, per category to be awarded certificates of merit and the opportunity to advance to the state level competition. Area judges for the contest were: Julie Cavanaugh, Barbara Gaines, Jennifer Johnston, Brigette Sorenesen, Tracy James Terry, and Donna Williams.

Chaeli Allen won for the primary literature entry entitled “The Sun,” and Stewart Olson won for the primary visual arts entry called, “I Wonder About Fire.” At the intermediate level Kirsten Liniger won for literature, Sarah Craig for photography, and Holly Olson for visual arts. These winning submissions will be entered into the Connecticut PTA program.
