Occupation: I teach sixth grade math and science at Reed Intermediate School.

Family: I have a lovely wife, Sharon, and two stepchildren, Candice, who is a sophomore at Newtown High School, and Drew, who is a freshman there. I have two kids of my own. Becca is a yoga teacher in Colorado Springs and David works at Danbury Hospital and with Newtown Ambulance Services. He is an EMT and going on to school to become a physician’s assistant. He graduated from Fordham in 2005.

Pets: We have three great dogs: Luke, London, and Cairo. They are all golden retrievers.

How long have you lived in Newtown? I think I came here in 1984 from Denver, so about 22 years.

What do you like to do in your free time? I like to play golf and I walk every single day. I’ve got to be dead not to walk. It’s my connection with my planet. I’m a computer geek. I do a lot of video editing and I build computers. I have many computers and I use them for my video production club at RIS and for a video production camp in the summer. And I read a lot.

What is the most recent book you have read? The Fifth Horseman by James Patterson. I read it in one sitting. I like adventure novels and murder-mysteries. My favorite author is John Sanford. He writes “prey” novels. What’s cool is that at parent-teacher conferences, sometimes people recommend books to me, so I’m introduced to a lot of new authors. I like that.

Do you have a favorite travel destination? Southern California. That’s where my folks and my brother live. So it’s nice to go out to California. My sister lives a couple of hours away in Arizona, so I get to see her, too. And the weather is great, of course.

What is the best thing about Newtown? It’s still country. On a walk in the morning in these fields up at Fairfield Hills you can be as far away from everything as you feel you can be. You have total rural even though you have I-84 right there. I come up with a lot of ideas on these walks.

What are you most proud of in your life? I’m proud of what my kids have become and I’m proud to have been a part of all the kids that have come into my life. My mark that’s been left has been one of enthusiasm and uniqueness.

Do you have a hero? My mom and dad. My parents believed in family and that’s absolutely important. They instilled values in us and the sense of right and wrong.

What is your personal philosophy? One day at a time. When you decide to do something, accept that decision, do it the best you can, and don’t second-guess yourself.
