To Lose The Litter
Newtown Lions Club will sponsor Newtownâs annual Lose the Litter Day on Saturday, April 28, from 9 am to 1 pm, with a rain date of May 5.
Residents of Newtown will have the opportunity to cleanup roadsides in town. Volunteers may pick up bags and gloves at Newtown Middle school any time on the day of the event, and cleanup may be done at any time during the day. The Lions are looking for individuals to act as road captains to line up volunteers for the event.
Volunteers may select a particular road or they may be assigned a road on the day of the event. Participants who find one of the coveted âGolden Cansâ will win tickets to the movies at Edmond Town Hall. The litter collected by participants may be dropped off at the highway department headquarters on Turkey Hill Road.
This will be Newtownâs 18th Lose the Litter Day. The project was started by Judy Holmes and the Newtown Environmental Action Team, which ran the program for the first six years.
The Newtown Lions have continued the project in recent years. In the past, the project has drawn wide support from town residents, and more than 300 volunteers have turned out to give the townâs roadsides a thorough spring cleaning.
Anyone interested in more information or in volunteering for a particular road may call Lincoln Sander at 364-1833.
