‘Art In Bloom’ Spring Fundraiser May 3

Residents are invited to join The Garden Club of Newtown for a celebration of spring on Saturday, May 3, from 4 to 6 pm, when the club presents its spring fundraiser, “Art In Bloom,” this year in a new location.

An elegant wine and hors d’oeuvres event, the event this year will move to the historic Budd House, the private residence at 50 Main Street. Shane Miller, a member of the club, and her husband George are the owners of the 1869 house that is a wonderful example of the Empire Style.

“Art In Bloom” will feature the work of Newtown artists displayed with complementary flower arrangements designed by members of the club. All of the artists being featured in “Art in Bloom” are Newtown residents. Betty Christensen, Dick McEvoy, Ruth Newquist and Virginia Zic are painters, and Bob Berthier and Frank Gardner are photographers. At least ten artwork-floral arrangements have been confirmed, with a few more that may be added by the afternoon of the event.

This is not a traditional flower show with judges and rules to follow. The only instruction to the club members who create the arrangements is to make something that is attractive and coordinates with or interprets the specific artwork. Most of the art will be available for purchase, and the floral arrangements will be raffled at the end of the event.

Members of the club will also prepare the hors d’oeuvres that will be served along with wine. In recent years this group has organized a tea which was so popular that a cookbook was compiled of recipes from members and special friends. Flower Buds To Taste Buds, the club’s cookbook, will also be available for purchase during “Art in Bloom.”

Tickets are $25 per person and reservations can be made by calling club president Beth Caldwell at 270-0665. Tickets will also be available at the door.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit Newtown Scholarship Association, a group the garden club has supported for a number of years.
