Standout Performances For Track And Field Athletes In Class LL Meet

The Class LL state track and field championships took place at New Britain's Willow Brook Park on June 1, and Newtown High School's squads had some standout performances.

Both the girls' and boys' lineups scored 22 points; the girls placed tenth and Ridgefield was first with 84 points, and the boys came in 14th and Danbury took the top spot with 110.70 points.

Makenna Cerney was second in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 46.16, and came in 11th in the 100 hurdles in 17.09.

Sarah Mawdsley placed tenth in the 3200, finishing in 11:45.94.

The Nighthawk girls had several strong efforts in the field events led by a four-five finish in the pole vault competition as Jackie Sgobbo cleared 10 feet and Lauren Russo cleared the bar at 9-06.

Cameron Vazquez was tenth in the high jump with a leap of 4-10. Sarah Dowling was ninth in the long jump competition with a distance of 16-01.25.

In the shot-put competition, Annika Alexander was eighth with a throw of 31-11, and Marley Marston was ninth with a 31-06.

In the discus throw, Alexander placed fifth with a throw of 103-03. In the javelin throw, Marston placed 11th with an 87-03.

On the boys' side, Cole Terry came in fourth in the 110 hurdles, finishing in 16.09. Terry also came in fourth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 41.84, just ahead of teammate and seventh-place finisher Brett Deri, who came across the line in 42.02.

Newtown's relay teams had nice efforts. The 4x100 contingent of Kevin Arther, Corman Roe, Ben Mason, and Hunter Cobb was 13th in 45.47.

The 4x400 relay team of Arther, Joel Duval, Richard Linley, and Terry placed 12th in 3:32.96.

The 4x800 relay comprising Dylan Bartlett, Christian Lestik, Ryan Escoda, and Duval, was 12th in 8:32.56.

Jack Godfrey led the Hawks in the field events with a runner-up placement in the shot-put event, throwing 49-08. Godfrey also logged a seventh-place result in the discus event with a throw of 121 feet.

In the pole vault competition, Dylan Lew placed 11th, clearing 11-06.

Sam Duffy was 11th in the triple jump with a 39-01.50, and Connery Mayer was 13th with a 37-01.
