Positive Parenting

POSITIVE PARENTING workshops are held at NYS and may also be hosted in your school or home! We are presently setting up the fall schedule so now is the time to inquire. There are currently two programs available: Positive Parenting geared for parents of pre-school and elementary school children and Welcome to the Teen Zone for parents of middle and high school.

New to NYS’s Parenting Programs this fall will be a course for parents of special needs children.

To further reach out into the community, NYS staff members are contacting local businesses to set up PP programs for employees at their place of business. These sessions may be held during lunchtime or another convenient time during the workday.

Our Parenting Programs are a great way to meet people who may be dealing with many of the same issues. If you would like to host a Positive Parenting program in your home, school, or business, please contact Roseanne Loring at 270-4335 for further information.

“LEARNING TO GROW”

The Youth Garden is a work in progress. Youth Services is fortunate to have a part-time landscape architect now on staff. With degrees also in biology and ecology NYS’s newest addition will work with middle and high school age youth. Time will be spent designing various landscapes, learning varieties of flowers and vegetables, and tips on how to avoid insects or animals munching away at the “fruits of labor.” Work will continue throughout the year. So, if you enjoy gardening, or being outside, and have some spare time to volunteer, please call the office for further information.

MENTORSHIP

Are you interested in becoming a certified mentor? NYS will work around your summer schedule. We welcome all high school students and adults who would like to give some of their time to help someone.

One course has already been held and another is planned for early August.

The High School Youth Advisory Board (HS YAB) and the Middle School Youth Advisory Board (MS YAB) are on hiatus for the summer.

ATTENTION MS YAB members (present and interested ones) please watch this column for a possible joint community service project in late August. Details as they become available.

If you are interesting in joining one of these groups please call the NYS office. New members are always welcome!

NYCAAP – Meeting times will vary. Please call the office for dates and times.

All programs will take place at Newtown Youth Services, 41-A Main Street (next to Town Hall), unless noted. For further information on any of the above programs, please call Newtown Youth Services at 270-4335.
