Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

This Week’s Programs

*On August 7, depart at 10:45 am for CONNECTICUT CRUISING. Lunch at Abbott’s Lobsters of Noank, Conn., and then relax on Seapony LLC for an hour and a half cruise on the Thames River in New London. Cost is $75.

*LIFE LINE SCREENING seminar will be Wednesday, August 8, at 1 pm.

*Enjoy German American bands, lots of food, craft vendors and of course the kegs will be tapped at the HUNTER MOUNTAIN (N.Y.) GERMAN ALPS festival on August 11. Depart 8 am; $53 per person.

Coming Up

*CRAFT CLASS on Tuesday, August 14, at 1 pm will be to make Sumi-e, a Chinese brush painting.

*POT LUCK DINNER will be Tuesday, August 14, at 5 pm. This month’s dinner will be chicken salads, veggies, and fruit, along with coffee, tea or lemonade. The cost is $5.

*Join BILL MICHAELS for music, song, and dance on Wednesday, August 15, at 1 pm.

*Bring a 50-50 cotton shirt for our TIE-DYE craft class on Thursday, August 23, at 1 pm. Call the center to sign up.

*BINGO will be on August 22 and August 29 at 1 pm

 

Day Trips

*Dan and Galla present a loving, spirited tribute to the country, featuring music of the 50s, ragtime, polkas, Russian, country, patriotic, Big Band, Irish, Italian and sing-alongs at HUNTS LANDING on August 16. Depart 9 am; $74 per person.

*Head for YANKEE CANDLE in Massachusetts on Tuesday, August 28. Lunch at Delaney House and then enjoy a river cruise on the Lady Bea along the Connecticut River. Depart at 8 am; cost is $75.

*A DAY AT THE RACES at Monticello, N.Y., with live harness racing on Tuesday, September 11. Depart at 9 am; cost is $38.

*THE ROCKETTES at Radio City Music Hall on Friday, November 9, with lunch at Rudy’s. Early booking special, $105 per person.

*Visit Broadway and see JERSEY BOYS and have lunch at Oscar’s at the famous Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Wednesday, December 5. Depart the Senior Center at 9:15 am; cost is $193 per person.

 

Overnight Trips

*FUTURE TRIPS include an 8-day tour of Scotland, August 22–30; and an Atlantic Canada Cruise September 3–8. Trip booklets are available at the front desk.

Recurring Activities

*COMPUTER LESSONS are given every Monday and Tuesday at 3 pm.

*BOWLING at Brookfield Lanes for Senior “Fun Bowl,” Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am, with Mary Matern.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE TIME on Fridays at 1 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend. We supply the video and popcorn.

Monday: AM pinochle, hatha yoga, exercise, PM computer classes, chorus group.

Tuesday: AM Connecticut Cruising, pinochle, country-western line dancing; PM Tai Chi & Chi Kung, bowling, walking for fitness, computer classes, crafts.

Wednesday: AM exercise; PM bingo, crafts.

Thursday: AM Breakfast Club, hatha yoga, cards; PM bowling, walking for fitness, board games.

Friday: AM advanced mah jongg, sewing, quilting, PM movie time, knitting, cards.

 

Menu For Week of

August 6–10

Reservations must be made

3 days in advance.

Monday: August 6: Oven roasted chicken quarter, macaroni and cheese, green peas, wheat dinner roll, seasonal fresh fruit.

Tuesday: August 7: Corn chowder with crackers, chef’s salad with turkey, ham, and cheese on a bed of lettuce, with tomato and French dressing, Portuguese roll, fruit cocktail.

Wednesday: Beef tips with onions and peppers, mashed potatoes, diced carrots, wheat bread, marble cake.

Thursday: Cheese baked ziti, meatballs in marinara sauce, tossed salad with olives and ranch dressing, Italian bread, Bartlett pears.

Also, for planning ahead—

Monday: August 13: BBQ chicken quarter, potato salad, green beans, buttermilk biscuit, lemon cookie;

Tuesday: August 14: Italian wedding soup with crackers, tuna on hot dog roll with lettuce, creamy coleslaw, pickle wedge, seasonal fresh fruit.
