For Newtown Students

Connecticut Mastery Test scores were released by the state on Wednesday, July 29. Results can be found on the Connecticut Department of Education’s website, www.sde.ct.gov.

“We did well,” Superintendent of Schools Janet Robinson said within an hour of the CMT scores being released by the state at 11 am that day.

Math, she said, continued to be a strong point for Newtown. Assistant Superintendent of Schools Linda Gejda will present a detailed explanation of the results to the Board of Education in September, and parents can expect to receive their individual child’s results from the state in September.

Students in third grade tested in March scored 96.7 percent at/above proficiency in mathematics as compared to last year’s scores of 95.5 percent at/above proficiency. For reading, third graders scored 87.4 percent above at/above proficiency compared to last year’s score of 87.6 percent. In the area of writing, third grade students scored 95.2 percent at/above proficiency compared to last year’s 84.4 percent.

Students in fourth grade for mathematics scored 98.5 percent at/above proficiency compared to last years 96.1 percent. In reading, fourth grade students scored 94.6 percent at/above proficiency compared to last year’s score of 91.2 percent. For writing, fourth grade students scored 96.4 percent at/above proficiency compared to last year’s 97 percent.

Students in fifth grade for mathematics scored 98.1 percent at/above proficiency compared to last year’s 95.3 percent. Fifth grade students scored 95.2 percent at/above proficiency for reading compared to last year’s 89.9 percent. For writing, fifth grade students scored 97.7 percent at/above proficiency compared to last year’s 95.7 percent. For science, which is only administered to fifth and eighth grade students, fifth grade students received 93.9 percent at/above proficiency this year compared to 94.9 percent last year.

Students in sixth grade tested for mathematics scored 98.7 percent at/above proficiency compared to 95.3 percent last year. For reading, sixth grade students scored 95.4 percent at/above proficiency compared to last year’s 92.7. For writing, sixth grade students scored 92.2 percent at/above proficiency compared to 92.5 percent last year.

Seventh grade students tested for mathematics scored 98.6 percent at/above proficiency compared to 97 percent last year. For reading, they tested 96 percent at/above proficiency compared to last year’s 92.4 percent. For, writing seventh grade students scored 92.4 percent at/above proficiency compared to last year’s 92.2 percent.

Eighth grade students tested for mathematics on the CMT scored 99 percent at/above proficiency this year compared to last year’s score of 96.7 percent. For reading, eighth grade students scored 95.3 percent at/above proficiency compared to 93.9 percent last year. For writing they scored 93.8 percent at/above proficiency compared to last year’s 93.7 percent. For science eighth grade students scored 92.6 percent at/above proficiency compared to last year’s score of 95.8 percent.
