Occupation: I am a freelance musician. I’m a trumpet player, arranger, composer, and educator. I play with various bands in the area, and I’ll be playing at the Iridium Theater on Broadway, December 15. I’ve done local shows for HealingNewtown and the Arts Festival. I worked in the automobile industry for many, many years, and only recently have committed to being a fulltime musician.

Family: I’ve been married to Julia for 23 years, as of this February. We have three children. Olivia is 23, William is 21, and Eva is 12 years old.

Pets: We have two cats, Rocky and Lucy, otherwise known as “Big Kitty” and “Little Kitty.” Oh, and the goldfish, Jake. I’ve renamed it Megladon. It just keeps growing! I’m not sure it’s really a goldfish. I think it’s going to have to live in the bathtub pretty soon.

How long have you lived in Sandy Hook? We’ve been here for 18 years.

What do you like to do in your free time? I do practice a lot, and I write a lot of music. There’s always stuff to do around the house, too. I’m a toy train enthusiast and am building a Lionel train layout in my basement. I’ve been into this since I was a boy. I also collect antique cars. Right now, the only one I have is my first car ever, a 1948 Dodge Business Coupe. It has an enormous trunk. It was great for the Norwalk Drive-In when I was a kid!

What kind of music do you listen to? I grew up listening to big band music, from my parents’ era. I love that sound. I started listening to Louie Armstrong as a kid, but I was 12 before I had the chance to take trumpet lessons. I love jazz, and some of the more obscure classical music. The New Age music now is great, like dub step. It’s interesting.

Do you have a favorite travel destination? I’d like one day to go and visit Sicily, particularly the town my grandfather came from. We don’t travel that much. I like where we are!

What is the best thing about Newtown? The best thing is the great friends I’ve made here. My friends are very supportive. It never ceases to amaze me the people that are out there. I love the small town feel, and we love the woods. There’s a lot of unity in this town.

Who has been the greatest influence in your life? That would be my father, Joseph Provenzano. He was a civil engineer. No one would hire him, because he was Sicilian, so he changed his name. He went to night school. He was hardworking and he taught me to respect others, regardless of race, religion, or gender. He thought family was the most important thing. He was a good man.

Do you have a personal philosophy? Never judge a book by its cover.

Do you have a guilty pleasure? I like a good beer, but not every day. I love Steel Rail, which is a great beer.
