Glorydays -- July 28, 1995

This week in 1990

Newtown Little League twelve-year-old Rich Rekos, who hadn't hit a home run in

his first 50-some Majors Division games, homered for the fifth-straight game

as the Newtown All-Star team defeated Seymour 15-5. Matt Zavatsky and Chris

Petitti also homered in the game for the local stars.

This week in 1985

After being only the second girl in Newtown Little League history to be named

to the Majors Division All-Star Team, Dara Zemo stroked three hits as the

Stars beat Derby 16-9 to advance to the District 2 finals. Brad Bednar banged

two homers in the game for Newtown, Ken Barney hit one, and Jerry Reidy was

4-for-4 with a triple and a home run.

This week in 1980

Marty Lee ripped a two-run homer and Charles Spolar and Bruce Ratcliffe each

had RBI doubles as the Newtown Little League All-Stars beat Redding 6-3 in the

New Milford Invitational Tournament. Newtown then won its fifth-straight

tournament game behind the shutout pitching performance of Tim Zeno. Zeno

blanked West Redding 28-0 as Chris Seman, Tom Seibert, and Lee all homered for

Newtown in the blowout.

This week in 1975

Jim Guariglia was 5-for-6 and Ron Weemer was 3-for-4 with a home run as

Matty's Restaurant won its third-straight game, 24-6 over Dean's, in the 'A'

Division of the Newtown Slo-Pitch Softball League. In the 'B' League, Ed Milot

had four hits and Jack Shpunt hit two home runs as the Park & Rec Team beat

The White Birch, 18-11.

This week in 1970

The Special Site Committee presented its report to the Newtown Board of

Education recommending some 30 acres on Boggs Hill Road as the site for a new

elementary school. The land, owned by the family of Judge John Boyle later

would become Head O Meadow School.

This week in 1965

The Sandy Hook Drug Cardinals finished the season second, to the Dodgers, in

the Newtown Little League Majors Division, and had their team photo appear in

The Newtown Bee. The Cardinals, coached by George Powell and Richard Newton,

included Clayton Shaw, Bill Casey, Graham Shaw, Scott Whitehead, Zip Randall,

Dick Newman, Bill Piccirillo, Gordon Dooley, Ken Casey, Ed Donahue, Ralph

Arata, Charles Tilson, and Don Zinn.

This week in 1960

Many promising young swimmers showed their stuff at what was called " the best

swimming races ever held at A Fenn Dickinson Park. " Some of the talented

young swimmers included Karen Knapp, Diane Berkins, Cindy Graf, Susan

Cavanaugh, Peter Burns, Michael Holmes, Robert Nyquist, Wayne Hartman, Jane

Unger, Barbara Gretsch, Barbara Urban, Sandy Hyatt, Gilbert Burns, and Joe

Hoffman.

This week in 1955

A Newtown Little League post-season double header was scheduled to be played

at the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the purchase of the land of

Newtown from the Indians. The games would be a showcase for the development of

the young lads who had just completed the first Newtown LL season ever.

This week in 1950

His team down 17-13, George Kingman came to the plate with two outs and the

bases loaded in the bottom of the last inning. Kingman had been the game's

star in the first matchup between the Newtown Playground Softballers and the

Ridgefield Lakers, but flied out to end the game this time. Kingman and George

Hanlon each had three hits in the game for the hard-luck losers.
