With an end goal of being championship-ready when the mid-October South-West Conference meet is held, Newtown High School’s boys’ cross country team treated its regular season meet at Bethel High as a training day on September 17. After all, several team members were sidelined with illness and injury bugs the week before, and their workout regiment was off.

Coming off a 42-0 blanking of South-West Conference opponent New Milford on September 13, the Newtown High School football team turns its attention to its first nonconference clash of the fall with a visit to Southern Connecticut Conference team Fairfield Prep. The Nighthawks will visit the Jesuits on Friday, September 20, beginning at 6 pm.

Newtown High School’s girls’ swimming and diving team kicked off the regular season with an 84-76 win over host Stratford, at Flood Middle School, on September 13. The Nighthawks had seven state championship and 22 South-West Conference qualifiers.

Newtown High School’s boys’ soccer team saw its offense thrive with a five-player front in the season opener, a 4-3 win over visiting Naugatuck, at Blue & Gold Stadium, on September 14.

One advantage to practice over game play is repetition. For Newtown High School’s field hockey team, they got quite the practice-like experience in their season-opener, a 5-0 blanking of visiting Watertown, at Treadwell Park on September 12.

In a rematch of last year’s South-West Conference girls’ soccer title game, won by Newtown, the host Nighthawks and Pomperaug of Southbury Panthers finished in a 1-1 tie under the lights at Blue & Gold Stadium on September 12.

Over the course of 50 years, there are going to be changes. While girls and boys have participated in cheerleading and football at the youth level in town for a past half century, and Newtown Youth Football & Cheer has been a fall fixture on the grass behind Hawley School through all of these turns of the calendar, there have been some variations to the theme.

Trailing two games to one and behind 22-16 in what could have been visiting Darien’s put-away set, Newtown High School’s girls’ volleyball team put together quite a comeback on September 13.

The Boot seemingly has found a permanent home. Newtown High School’s football team blanked visiting New Milford 42-0 at Blue & Gold Stadium on September 13, keeping hold of the Boot Trophy for yet another season.
