Opening Day of the trout fishing season, Saturday, April 19, brought fishermen out to the are lakes, ponds, and streams to hook their worms, cast their lines, and reel in some lunch — or just catch to throw back.

Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) announced early in April that it expected to stock almost 390,000 trout — more than 200 truckloads — into 100 lakes and ponds, and 194 rivers and streams in time for Opening Day. Stocking was delayed due to prolonged winter conditions.

Taunton Lake, Newtown Fish & Game Club’s primary source for fishing, drew men, women, and children throughout the morning and afternoon. Some fishermen tried their luck from along the shore, and others basked in the warm sun from their boats while waiting for a bite.

Anglers should consult the Connecticut Angler’s Guide for detailed information on specific locations and angling regulations. Printed versions of the 2014 Angler’s Guide are now available at more than 350 locations statewide, including town halls, bait & tackle shops, and other vendors selling outdoor equipment, DEEP facilities, and commercial marinas, and campgrounds.
