Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

This Week’s Programs

*Inspirational SEMINAR for your retirement options on Wednesday, September 24, at 1 pm. Highlights include unique ways of withdrawing money out of an IRA/401K, ways to leave a lasting legacy, estate planning and protection of assets, and what are the right investments for seniors.

*Play BINGO on September 25, October 8, October 15, and October 23.

*HAIRCUTS will be offered every Monday by appointment between 12:30 and 2 pm. Cost is $12 for women and $10 for men. Call 270-4310.

Upcoming Programs

*Beginning on October 1, exercise classes will be OPEN TO ALL. Classes will be Mondays and Wednesday at 10:30 am and 2:30 pm.

*DINNER AND A MOVIE on October 7, 5 to 7 pm, $5 and bring a dessert to share. Call 270-4310 to RSVP.

*HARVEST BAZAAR on Friday and Saturday, October 24 and 25, from 9 am to 4 pm. Donations of crafts, white elephant or baked goods can be donated to sell at the bazaar. Call 270-4310.

*ANNUAL FLU SHOT CLINICS will be Tuesdays, October 7, 14, 21, and 28, from 9 am until noon. Appointments are not necessary.

*CRAFT CLASSES will be October 7 with Rita, and on October 15 make decorated baskets with Joan.

*“THINK PINK” tea party on Tuesday, October 16, at 1 pm hosted by Danbury Hospital Praxair Cancer Center. A one-hour educational program to bring awareness of the importance of regular screening for the early detection of breast cancer.

*COMMISSION ON AGING with be Monday, October 20, at 5 pm.

*HALLOWEEN BINGO PARTY, Wednesday, October 29, Costumes are a must! Prizes, Halloween punch and chips and dips.

*MOHEGAN SUN casino bus trip on Tuesday, October 30, 8:30 am, includes food coupon two match plays and driver’s gratuity.

Day Trips

*The trip to Lexington and Concord, Mass., on September 30 has been canceled.

*On Thursday, October 9, travel north to scenic Vermont. Feast at the Putney Inn followed by a relaxing train ride on the GREEN MOUNTAIN FLYER, while viewing the colorful autumn foliage. Depart 8 am; $95 per person.

*Feast all day while singing and dancing along with the German band and dancers at the OKTOBERFEST at Platzl Brauhaus, Pomona, N.Y., on Wednesday, October 22. Depart at 8:45 am, cost is $80.

Recurring Activities

*YOGA classes are Monday and Thursday at 10:30 am.

*Billiards room; poker/card room; ping pong; and Wii bowling, golf, tennis, and baseball.

*Wii BOWLING, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons.

*CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday morning from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am, with Mary Matern.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE TIME on Fridays at 1 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend. We supply the video and popcorn.

Monday: AM pinochle, hatha yoga, exercise, PM computer classes, chorus group.

Tuesday: AM pinochle, country-western line dancing; PM Tai Chi & Chi Kung, bowling, walking for fitness, computer classes, crafts.

Wednesday: AM exercise; PM bingo, crafts.

Thursday: AM Breakfast Club, hatha yoga, cards; PM bowling, walking for fitness, board games.

Friday: AM advanced mah jongg, sewing, quilting, PM knitting, cards.

Menu For Week Of September 22–26

Monday: Stuffed pepper with sauce, egg noodles, diced carrots, seedless rye bread, oatmeal chocolate chip cookie.

Tuesday: Lemon pepper fish with tartar sauce or roast beef sandwich with mayonnaise, brown rice pilaf, broccoli cuts, wheat bread, cling peaches.

Wednesday: Oven roasted chicken quarter, O’Brien potatoes, fresh zucchini, potato bread, grape juice, seasonal fresh fruit.

Thursday: Yankee pot roast with gravy, mashed potato, bean blend vegetables, wheat dinner roll, birthday cake.

And for planning ahead—

Monday: September 29: Butter crumb fish with tartar sauce, roasted potato, Oriental blend vegetables, soft breadstick, orange juice, seasonal fresh fruit.

Tuesday: September 30: Caribbean chicken, peas and rice, tossed salad with croutons and ranch dressing, wheat dinner roll, pumpkin pie.
