Newtown Youth Football and Cheer will hold its 11th annual Golf Fundraiser on Monday, October 14, 2019 at Whitney Farms Golf Course, 175 Shelton Road in Monroe. Golfers of all levels may participate and those who would like to sign up for dinner only are also welcomed.

This past week’s game action speaks a lot to what the season has been like on the whole for Newtown High School’s girls’ soccer team. The Nighthawks are coming off 1-1 ties with visiting Masuk of Monroe on October 3 and host Notre Dame-Fairfield on October 7. Through nine games, the Nighthawks have five deadlocks in South-West Conference play and are within a point or two of four teams in the standings that have more wins, in part because of the three draws they have had in SWC play. Wins are worth three points, and ties are good for one point.

Coming off a 35-0 shutout of the host Pomperaug Panthers in a South-West Conference battle on October 4, Newtown High School’s football team faces its third Southern Connecticut Conference foe of the campaign in an October 11 visit to Shelton; kickoff is at 7 pm.

Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ cross country teams concluded the regular season with a pair of meets this past week. The teams hosted races on October 2 and traveled to Pomperaug of Southbury on October 7.

Newtown High School’s girls’ swimming and diving team defeated host New Fairfield 100-77, exhibitioning the final three events after sealing the team win on October 4. Due to pool renovations, the Nighthawks hosted a meet for the first time this season when Joel Barlow of Redding visited on October 7. The Hawks won 93-77, again sealing the win with three events remaining.

Newtown High School’s girls’ volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to host Joel Barlow of Redding on October 2, bounced back with a 3-2 win at Notre Dame-Fairfield on October 4, then fell 3-1 at New Milford on October 7.

Newtown High School's field hockey team defeated Bethel 7-1 on October 2 and topped Brookfield 6-0 two days later in contests at Blue & Gold Stadium, then went on the road and defeated New Fairfield 5-2 on October 8 to improve to 10-0 this fall.

Newtown High School’s boys’ soccer team seems to have taken well to the wet weather. The Nighthawks defeated a pair of South-West Conference foes in the rain this past week, earning a 2-0 shutout at Masuk of Monroe under a light mist on October 3 and blanking visiting Notre Dame-Fairfield 4-0 in heavy rain on October 7. Those triumphs sandwiched a 4-0 setback at Joel Barlow of Redding on a nice weather day, October 5.

A full week’s rest between games was a welcomed break in the schedule for Newtown High School’s boys’ soccer team. Sure, it may be just three weeks into the campaign, but it has been an extra busy stretch for the Nighthawks, who had played two games in as many days in late September and have been battling some bumps and bruises.
