A Town Says ‘Thank You’

To the Editor:

Newtown’s “Thank You Salute” to former representative Julia Wasserman was an exciting and wonderful affair thanks to the time and wonderful energetic efforts of many, many local Newtowners.

The venerable and historic Edmond Town Hall was sparkling and shining like a brand-new penny (thanks to the overwhelming efforts of the Town Hall Board of Managers staff) and all festooned with red, white, and blue bunting and flags, dozens of red balloons and a 30-foot red banner loudly proclaiming the “Salute to Julia.”

The Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard came to add pomp and splendor to the crisp morning affair. The Governor’s Horse Guard troops, under the Command of Major Gordon J. Johnson, were dressed in their finest gold braid and Washington dress uniforms and Major Johnson ceremoniously dismounted to present Julia with one of the first volumes of their most recent history. Even the Second Company Horse Guard horses bowed and paid difference to Julia on her day.

The festive day was made possible through the efforts of many, many people and organizations including Anna Wiedemann, Mary Tietjen, Robin Buchanan, Marie Smith, Ellen Baff, Debbie Tendler, Barbara Bloom, Barbara O’Connor, Carol Mattagat, Democratic Town Committee, Town Hall Managers Staff, The Villa and Vito, Andrea’s Pastry Shop, Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard, Angelo Marini – Sal ePepe, the Honans, Republican Town Committee, Coach Rob Frangioni, and Newtown Youth Academy.

The friendly small town spirit of Newtown was expressed with warmth and sincerity as tons of people turned out to express their thanks and appreciation to Julia Wasserman for all her countless wonderful contributions to our town — Newtown. Very simply and sincerely said — Thank you, Julia.

Sincerely,

Mae S. Schmidle
