Tax Relief
To the Editor:
According to the Newtown Bee and the Superintendent of schools, everything is hunky dory with Newtown finances. You are getting a great deal, and youâre a fool if you donât approve the budget on the first referendum. It will only cost you pennies per minute to pay the extra property taxes, which on top of the staggering amount you already pay, youâll hardly even notice! After all, if they donât get the first nine-digit budget in the history of the town on the first try, the town wonât be able to borrow even more money that you will also eventually have to pay back.
This budget is all about bad deals made with the multitude of public sector unions in town that come home to roost each and every year. The lionâs share of Newtownâs spending goes for salaries and benefits; salaries and benefits for exactly the same people as last year, just at a rate that is rising and accelerating much faster than inflation or your income is. This budget is a test. A test of how far they can push us. Iâm sick of being pushed and like last year Iâm ready to push back. If you are too, you need to get to the polls April 24 and defeat this budget. It is the only measure of control in this process that we have. Letâs get it back under $100,000,000.
