Back Door Cafe Celebration
(with cuts)
BY MICHELE HOGAN
The Back Door Cafe at Newtown Middle School will be moving out of the middle
school at the end of this school year to make the space available for the
increasing numbers of middle school students.
Bob Chiappetta, pupil personnel services director, is hopeful that they will
relocate The Back Door Cafe in St John's Church in Sandy Hook. The Special
Education department of Newtown district is currently in negotiations with the
church.
Last Wednesday night the last banquet was held at the middle school location.
From Armondo's Shrimp with hot sauce to Tom's Beef Tips with vegetables,
parents and guests were treated to a most memorable dinner.
A huge dragon peered over the cozy arrangements of small tables. Artwork
reminiscent of ancient China, Japan and Korea decorated the walls, while
parents and friends enjoyed a beautifully catered meal.
The students selected to participate in this Special Education program learn
teamwork and cooperation, as well as culinary skills.
Restaurant Manager Dru Saren said that with this program, every student has
the opportunity to shine.
Shane Murphy, student, was surfing the Internet when he found some interesting
stories and information on Korean and Chinese dragons. Mike Abric and Tom
Montague continued the research, and then created their own six foot high
Korean dragon (the four-toed dragon).
An entrepreneurial program, students learn everything from research skills to
mathematics, all as part of the daily operation of a real business.
In the true spirit of performance assessment, the students final exam was to
cater a full-course Asian meal. By all accounts, the students passed with
flying colors.
Some students, like Tiffany Lowe and Sarah Bennett, hope to apply the culinary
skills they are learning to restaurant work in the future.
Kim Vasillescu, who is more interested in hairdressing than food services,
said that the experience has strengthened her ability to work as part of a
team.
Restaurant managers Dru Saren and Gloria Arsenian work closely with Paulette
Cavanaugh, Chairman on the Special Education Department, to select students to
participate in the program.
Mrs Cavanaugh said "These kids are wonderful. We try to pick kids like these,
people who we think will succeed in a team oriented environment."
