With two weeks in the book, The Gym at Newtown and Team Duncanson are undefeated at 2-0 in The Gym at Newtown Womenâs Basketball League.

This week, Team Keenan defeated Team Trolle, 53-50, as Rachel McGrath scored 15 points and registered three steals. Denise Passano and Alexandra Heron both chipped in with 14 points and combined for 12 rebounds and five steals. Christina Preville added 10 points and pulled down 10 boards and had a block shot. For Team Trolle, Jody Rajcula scored a game-high 22 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Kim Lowell canned 17 points while Laura Cook chipped in with nine.

The Gym at Newtown defeated Team Katrinak, 60-46, as Jennifer Thomas scored 16 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Christy Harty added 12 points with nine rebounds while Carolyn Schrieber chipped in with 10 points and Mel Darrah added nine points and five boards. For Team Katrinak, Amy Proulx popped in 23 points with two three-pointers and also pulled down six boards. Karen Katrinak added 14 points, eight rebounds and a game-high seven blocks and a steal. Laurie Bain chipped in with seven points.

Team Duncanson defeated Alpine Realty, 51-43, as Lisa Schang dropped in 13 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Tracy Pellela added 12 points while Jen Dayton chipped in with 11 points. Jennifer Zdziarski scored nine points and pulled down a game-high 17 rebounds as Joanne Duncanson chipped in with six points and five rebounds. For Alpine Realty, Shelby Neveriski scored 19 points with nine rebounds and five steals. Kelly Fengler added 16 points and eight boards. Tori Anderton added 10 points.

In the opening week of action, Team Duncanson edged Team Trolle, 47-40, as Schang scored a game-high 24 points with 17 rebounds. For Team Trolle, Rajcula canned 18 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.

Alpine Realty powered past Team Katrinak, 67-54, behind Neveriskiâs 34-point, 10-rebound effort. Kelly Fengler added 12 points and pulled down 17 rebounds as Tori Anderton dropped in 13 points. For Team Katrinak,Â Proulx hit for 24 points, including four three pointers, as Lynn Yeager added 21 points and 19 rebounds. Bain chipped in with eight points and nine rebounds while Kathy Blewett added a point.

The final game of the night was won by forfeit by Team Darrah team.

The voters certainly spoke — and I respect the outcome — but let’s not forget that a “majority” doesn’t mean everyone agreed. Many of us are deeply concerned about the rising cost of living here. Supporting schools and services is important, but so is ensuring that residents can afford to stay in the town they love. We all want Newtown to be a great place to live, but lately, it’s starting to feel less like “Nicer in Newtown” and more like “More Expensive in Newtown.” That’s not sustainable, and it’s not a criticism of the town itself — it’s a call for responsible budgeting and long-term planning that doesn’t rely on tax increases year after year. I hope future decisions will reflect not just the desire to maintain services, but also the need to ease the financial burden on residents.

Budget, Capital Projects Pass: Officials Respond

I appreciate the passion behind this message, and I absolutely understand the desire to invest in our town. That said, I voted no — not because I don't care about Newtown, but because I do. Fiscal responsibility is not about ignoring problems, it’s about making sure we address them in a sustainable and transparent way. It’s frustrating to feel like every year there’s a new “urgent” reason to raise taxes, with little serious effort to curb spending or prioritize needs. I worry this just sets the stage for another round of increases next year. That doesn't mean I’m against education, safety, or our town’s future — it means I believe in accountability and in asking tough questions about how our money is managed. Voting no wasn't a rejection of Newtown — it was a call for more thoughtful, balanced leadership. I hope future conversations can include all perspectives, not just those willing to write a bigger check.

The Voters Chose Newtown

The voters spoke, loud and clear that they support our schools and municipal services. The majority vote was a mandate to keep delivering well rated education services and keep it" Nicer in Newtown."
