SENIOR NEWS

Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by the Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal*Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

*FIESTA DINNER THEATER presents Grandpa’s Ghost on May 16. The cost is $73. Departure time is 9:15 from the center. Call the Senior Center for reservations or additional information.

*REMINDER: * Stop in or call the Senior Center for information, overnight trip booklets, or reservations for the various trips that are being offered.

*The center is closed on Memorial Day, May 29.

*A day of chance at MOHEGAN SUN on Tuesday, May 30, which includes $10 food coupon, two $5 pull tabs. Depart at 8 am; cost is $26.

*CRAZY FOR COOPERSTOWN is on Wednesday and Thursday, June 7–8; depart at 7:30 am. Visit the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Fenimore Museum, and Farmers’ Museum. Lunch at the famous historical Otesaga Hotel. Cost per person is $249 single; $199 double; and $189 triple, which includes deluxe motorcoach transportation.

*THE RICKY & LUCY SHOW is at Chez Josef in Agawam, Mass., on June 7. The bus will leave the Senior Center at 8:45. Cost per person is $68.

*BALLROOM DANCE LESSONS, Thursday, June 8, 15, 22, and 29, from 4 to 5 pm, $28 per person ($7 per hour). Join Joseph & Nonnie Williams and dance the fox trot, waltz, cha-cha and more. Must attend all 4 classes. Space is limited. Call to sign up.

* See JIM NABORS at MOHEGAN SUN on Tuesday, June 13. The price is $65 and includes lunch voucher and two free bet coupons. Departure is 8:15 am.

*AARP DRIVING CLASSES will be June 19 & 20, from 1 to 5 pm. The cost is $10, payable on the day of the class. Call to sign up.

* ALL ABOARD on the Belle of Brattleboro for a cruise of New England’s longest river. Leave the Senior Center at 7 am, on Friday, July 7, for Putney, Vt. The cost is $76.

*Travel to the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville on Tuesday, July 18, for a POLKA FEST. The cost is $58, and departure is 10 am. Enjoy a family style lunch of Polish food accompanied by the rousing music of Dick Pillar and his Polkabration Band.

*TRAVEL TO THE ISLANDS at Camp Conri Lodge in Ashford, Monday to Friday, July 24–28. For $190 per person enjoy three meals a day, physical, spiritual, and social activities, crafts, bible study, fishing, talent night, boating, and bingo.

*THREE-DAY TRIP from August 9 to 11. See the play Ruth, have an Amish dinner at Hershey Farm, a local tour of the chocolate capital Hershey, Penn., see The 2006 Summer Spectacular, visit the Choo Choo Barn, ride the Strasburg Railroad and more. The cost is $389 for double, $505, single, and $379, triple.

*CRUISE HAWAII on the New Pride of Aloha including two nights at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, September 1–10.

*DATE CHANGES for Westchester Dinner Theater: Hot Mikado is changed from July 14 to September 14 and Full Monty is changed from September 14 to October 26.

*MAINE RAIL & SAIL — A scenic train ride and Rockland Harbor cruise, September 26–28. The cost is $349 for double, $459, single, and $339, triple.

Monday, May 15: Salisbury steak with gravy, mashed potatoes, peas & diced carrots, wheat dinner roll, cling peaches;

Tuesday, May 16: Boneless chicken cacciatore over egg noodles, green beans, soft breadstick, chocolate chip cookie.

Wednesday: Strawberry Day: Turkey a la king served over rice, tossed salad with tomato and French dressing, buttermilk biscuit, strawberry shortcake;

Thursday: Spaghetti with meatballs, marinara sauce, and parmesan cheese, fresh zucchini, Italian bread, orange juice, Italian ice;

Friday: Minestrone soup, unsalted crackers, butter-crumb fish OR ham & cheese on rye with mustard, brown rice pilaf, broccoli florets, seedless rye bread, seasonal fresh fruit.

Also, for planning ahead—

Monday, May 22: Hearty chicken stew, egg noodles, broccoli florets, buttermilk biscuit, apple juice, butterscotch pudding with whipped topping;

Tuesday, May 23: Roast pork loin with gravy, rosemary roasted potatoes, California blend vegetables, 100% whole wheat bread, seasonal fresh fruit.

Monday: AM pinochle, hatha yoga, exercise, PM chorus group;

Tuesday: AM Fiesta Dinner Theater, pinochle, country-western line dancing, PM bowling (at Brookfield Lanes), crafts;

Wednesday: AM pinochle, exercise; PM crafts;

Thursday: AM pinochle, hatha yoga, bowling, cards;

Friday: AM advanced mah jongg, sewing, quilting, PM knitting, cards.
