Fingerprinting service at Newtown Police Department, which had been on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has returned in limited fashion to 3 Main Street.

Fingerprinting had been on hold since mid-March to keep the public and police officers safe during the height of the outbreak. Newtown PD also put the service on hold in accordance with Governor Ned Lamont’s Executive Order 7E, which allowed police departments to limit or eliminate fingerprinting for background checks.

Appointments are currently available on Wednesdays between 3 and 6 pm. Walk-ins are not allowed.

Call 203-270-4234 to make an appointment.

Those applying for a pistol permit will need to follow the complete instructions provided on the Pistol Permits page of the department’s website. Visit newtown-ct.gov and click on Public Safety, then Police Department, and then Pistol Permits (in the column along the left side of the page).

Alternately, fingerprinting for New Pistol Permits can be done by the Department of Public Safety via an online appointment booking system. Visit portal.ct.gov/despp (note: As of June 15, appointments through July 14 were fully booked; open appointments began as of July 15).

For those being fingerprinted for any other purpose, the fee is $15 per card. Accepted payments are check or money order, payable to Town of Newtown, made out prior to arrival. Cash and credit cards are not accepted.

Fingerprinting is performed for Newtown residents only.

Appointment Protocols

Newtown Police Department has announced the following protocols to follow for a fingerprinting appointment:

*Arrive ten minutes early. Enter the lobby five minutes prior to the time of the appointment. Only the person being fingerprinted will be permitted to enter the building.

*Face coverings must be worn.

*Temperature will be taken. Anyone with a temperature of 100.4 or higher will have to reschedule.

*Anyone feeling ill or who has been in contact with an individual with documented or suspected COVID-19 must cancel their appointment. Fingerprinting appointments can be rescheduled, but they must be at least two weeks later than the previously canceled appointment.

For additional information call 203-270-4234 or visit newtown-ct.gov/newtown-police-department.
