State Traffic Commission Will Consider Town Center Traffic Concerns
The State Traffic Commission (STC) says it will consider Newtown Police
Commission concerns about traffic congestion in the town center stemming from
the planned expansion of Newtown Shopping Center on Queen Street.
In a February 13 letter to the STC, the Police Commission asked the state
panel to study how best to handle increased traffic resulting from the
shopping center expansion.
The Police Commission letter followed property owners' complaints that
expanding the shopping center will worsen traffic problems in the town center,
especially on Church Hill Road.
At a February 6 Police Commission meeting, Borough Zoning Commission members
urged the Police Commission to seek a STC traffic study with particular
emphasis on the troublesome intersection of Church Hill Road and The
Boulevard.
On January 30, the borough zoners unanimously approved the shopping center
expansion and renovation project requested by the Kasper Group. Increased
traffic in the town center was the topic most often mentioned by members of
the public who have qualms about the shopping center expansion.
The Kasper Group plans to double the amount of store space at the center. A
Big Y supermarket will be the main tenant at the property. The new supermarket
is slated to open by December.
In the STC letter to the Police Commission, STC Executive Director Richard J.
Howard writes "As part of the standard review process (of the Kasper Group's
traffic study), you, as legal traffic authority of the town of Newtown, will
be kept apprised of the (STC) staff review by engineers in the division of
traffic engineering in the (state Department of Transportation). Any concerns
you have will be considered at that time."
The borough zoners had hoped to have the STC perform its own study of the
effect that shopping center expansion would have on town center traffic.
