Glory Days - November 17, 1995
This week in 1990
With 14 seconds remaining in overtime of the Class L state soccer championship
game, at Sachem Field, Newtown High's John Ball, who had been taken down from
behind, knelt at the top of the penalty box before rising and slamming a PK
along the ground to his left, lifting the NHS soccer team its first-ever state
title, 1-0 over Guilford. Ball's goal was set up when junior Ed Zang brought
the ball up the right sideline on a breakaway and crossed to Ball who was
fouled. Ball's 25th goal of the season would stand up as the most dramatic in
NHS history.
This week in 1985
NHS senior Jenny Murdy found the back of the cage with one minute left in
regulation, lifting the Newtown High field hockey team to a 1-0 win over
Immaculate in the season finale. The Lady Indians, coached by Pam Lupo,
finished the season at 2-7-5. Jackie Whiting was named to the All-WCC team
while Jeanine Beebee and Heather Lifey both earned All-Briggs honors.
This week in 1980
The Newtown Bees, coached by Tom Ermini, whipped up on Casino 47-0 in the
first round of the New Milford Touch Football League playoffs. Brian Dudeck
passed for seven Newtown touchdowns connecting with Terry Tierney for three
scores and Rich Schnitzel and Kevin Ducey for a pair each.
This week in 1975
Newtown's Billy Link set a New Milford Touch Football League record when he
latched onto a pair of touchdown passes giving him 25 for the season. Newtown
defeated Morey's of New Milford 26-0 in the game as quarterback Jason Stevens
passed for two scores and ran for two others. George DeSilva and Rich Keefer
also had impressive games for Newtown.
This week in 1970
The Newtown High football team celebrated its first WCC title with a year-end
banquet complete with a cake shaped like a football field, made by the
parents. The Indians, who outscored their competition 294-24 while going 8-0,
were coached by Pete Kohut, Zyg Olbrys and Norm Westlake.
This week in 1965
At Newtown High's Annual Victory Dance, sponsored by the student council, Bob
Sveda and the Newtown High School soccer team were presented with a trophy for
bringing home the first WCC title - in any sport - in school history.
This week in 1960
Talks began for the reformation of a Men's Basketball League to be held
through the Parks and Recreation Department. Marv Shredders planned on
entering his team, while coach Harold DeGroat put the word out for Newtown
Softball League teams to enter their squads as well. DeGroat also sought the
participation of teams from Fairfield State Hospital, who used to play in the
league when it began at the Edmund Town Hall gymnasium years earlier.
