Local Teacher Wins Presidential Award
(with cut)
Newtown resident Lois V. Gardner has been named the 1997 national winner of
the Presidential Award for Secondary Mathematics, the nation's highest honor
for mathematics and science teaching.
Mrs Gardner, who teaches sixth grade math at Broadview Middle School in
Danbury, was one of three finalists from Connecticut for the award, which has
been presented annually since 1983 by the National Science Foundation. The
foundation selects two teachers per state -- an elementary and a secondary
teacher in mathematics and science -- for this honor.
As a 1997 Presidential Award winner, Mrs Gardner will be honored for her
achievements during a four-day event that will start on June 16 in Washington,
D.C. The event will include dinner with the President; meetings with national,
state and local officials; a trip on the Potomac, and presentations by the
award winners.
The award also includes a $7,500 National Science Foundation grant to
Broadview that Mrs Gardner will direct for the improvement of the school's
mathematics and science programs.
Mrs Gardner has been teaching in Danbury for 32 years.
