Girls' Soccer Preview 1995
Entering into a new era with a new head coach, the Newtown High School girls'
soccer team will be looking to continue its one-time Western Connecticut
Conference dominance in the new South-West Conference.
Under the tutelage of new coach Kim Berglund, a former Division III College
All-American soccer forward from Cortland State, the Lady Indians will be
hoping to make it back to the conference finals for a 12th-straight time.
The team lost four players to graduation from last year's conference runner-up
(11-5-1) including two-time All-WCC forward Sarah McQuilkin and sweeper Brigid
Daley. But returning a total of nine starters as well as three others who saw
significant varsity time a year ago, this year's team isn't planning on
missing a beat.
Leading this year's squad of experienced returning players will be senior
tri-captains Melissa Eigen, Stephanie Nelson, and Maria Robertson - all three
starting in their fourth season with the varsity team.
Eigen, Newtown's All-WCC stopper, will be overseeing the defense again this
season while contributing to what should be an excellent offensive attack.
Nelson led last year's team with seven goals (along with McQuilkin) from the
center midfield position where she will again start.
While Newtown lost two key midfielders in Erin Archer, who moved to Texas, and
Lauren Pelletreau, who suffered a season-ending knee injury, coach Berglund
still has a wide variety of talented players to position there.
" We have a lot of things still to go over, " she said. " So far we've been
working on fundamentals and getting into shape. I've been shuffling different
players in and out of different positions to see what we have. "
Although coach Berglund doesn't have the positions etched in stone yet, she's
been looking at junior Rachel Gottmeier, junior Jenna Jones (six goals last
season), senior Emily Fries, and junior transfer student Melanie Tyrell to
join Nelson on the midfield.
Anchoring the Lady Indians front line this season will be Robertson, who
scored six goals last fall including a pair in Newtown's 2-1 overtime victory
over Immaculate in the WCC semifinals.
Robertson will be surrounded by senior Megan Czaplicke on the right wing, and
senior Sarah Howard on the left. Jenna Jones may also see time in a forward
slot. " I like the forwards to move around a lot up front, " said Berglund,
who was a three-time All-State player when she played forward at Ellington
High School. " I've seen some nice things with the girls so far. "
If this year's Newtown team has any question marks at all, they come on
defense, where the team is still young.
The biggest shoes to be filled are those of graduated sweeper Brigid Daley.
Senior Jen Triani, who played defense for last year's varsity will be taking
over there in front of returning junior goalie Allison Reif.
Returning on one side at fullback is junior Kate MacKenzie, while junior Beth
Mahoney is vying for a starting spot on the other side of the field.
" I'm kind of searching for fullbacks right now, " Berglund said. " We're
going to be a little young back there and are really going to have to
communicate. "
Berglund is currently considering a group of freshmen and sophomores for the
remaining positions.
Berglund will be assisted this year by former NHS standout Jennifer Reeher,
who played at the collegiate level at Middlebury College, and stands fourth on
Newtown High's all-time scoring list.
Newtown will play its home games at Treadwell Park this fall, and will open
the season there against Notre Dame of Fairfield on Thursday, September 14.
The lady Indians will look for their strongest competition again this season
from long-time rival and defending WCC champion, Weston. Bethel should also be
tough as should SWC newcomer, Laurelton Hall.
" I'm pretty excited about this season, " said NHS tri-captain Melissa Eigen.
" We really have about 16 different people who could start. This is probably
one of the best teams I've been on here. "
