Grand List Growth The Highest In Ten Years
This year's 4.65 percent increase in the grand list is the largest growth in
ten years, Tax Assessor Denise Hames reported this week.
The grand list is the overall value of all taxable property. This year's
figure of $1.56 billion reflects the town's significant growth in both
residential and commercial development in recent years. Some 250 homes were
built in the past year, according to Mrs Hames' report. In addition to homes,
the grand list also includes taxable items such as personal property and motor
vehicles as of October 1, 1997.
The value of real estate in Newtown grew to $1.3 billion, up $55 million from
1996. Assessments for personal property have grown to $57.4 million, up $7.9
million. Newtown residents own a total of 20,809 motor vehicles, 726 more than
in 1996. This has upped motor vehicle assessments to $127 million, up $7
million.
Newtown's growth appears to be the highest in the area. Danbury's grand list
is up just 0.7 percent, New Milford's is up less than one percent and Bethel
checked in with a 1.2 percent growth. Ridgefield's grand list is up 2.66
percent.
The 1995 grand list actually grew by 37.81 percent; however, that was due to
revaluation.
