Moss Dreadlocks And Dream Catchers: McLaughlin Winery Hosts Eclectic Show Of
Local Art
BY DOROTHY EVANS
Talk about an embarrassment of riches.
Imagine putting together an art show featuring hundreds of beautiful and
unique creations by 26 different artists, and imagine having the walls,
windows, doorways and furnishings of the McLaughlin Winery showroom as your
gallery.
Combining all these works into a pleasing and exciting display was the
challenge that Sandy Hook artist Virginia Zimmermann-Gutbrod set for herself
and she has been working for the past six months putting it all together.
The show, known as "The Hunter's Moon," is now on view at the McLaughlin
Winery off Alberts Hill Road. This is the third year in a row that Ms
Zimmermann-Gutbrod has managed to gather in one place works by many local
artists.
"Mostly, they found me, I didn't have to go looking," she said recently,
recalling the week before the show opened last Friday, November 21.
"Every box I unpacked held something exciting. It was great fun," she added.
Of the 26 artists featured, 15 are from Newtown and Sandy Hook, "which is
quite amazing in itself," Ms Zimmermann-Gutbrod noted, "to think we have so
many talented people in our own community."
Four of the artists were children whose parents also had works on display.
Ms Zimmermann-Gutbrod, who is most recently known for her charcoal and pastel
drawings of North Dakota scenes, submitted pieces that included hand-painted
furniture, walking sticks and decorative masks.
Other artists contributed ceramics and pottery, jewelry, woodwork, dried
flowers, decorated boxes and many other craft items.
Artists and artisans who participated in the exhibition were Alicia Ammirata,
Margaret Ammirata, Cynthia Battista, Maggie Boushell, Elissa Boushell, Karen
Bradlan, Susan Davy, Barbara Glass, Jack Gutbrod, Sarah Gutbrod, Eleanore
Kannewischer, Nancy Marcucilli, Pat Martin, Ulona Maxon, Karen Morris, Stacy
Olszewski, John Padilla, Karen Pinto, Nancy Schultz, Nancy Richter, Charley
Robinson, Jill Trigaux, Barbara Van Kirk, Bill Zimmermann, W.J. Zimmerman and
Virginia Zimmermann-Gutbrod.
The final two days of the "Hunter's Moon" art show and sale are Friday and
Saturday, November 28-29. The winery showroom will be open each day from 10 am
to 4:30 pm.
Directions from the flagpole: Come down Church Hill Road, cross over the Exit
10 overpass, turn left up Walnut Tree Hill Road and then turn left onto
Alberts Hill Road. The winery is on the right hand side. Note: You will have
to continue driving a little way along Walnut Tree Hill Road, which is long
and winding, and watch for McLaughlin Winery signs.
