It was a pretty uneventful opening day of the trout fishing season for Andrew Volkers and his dad.

They had no luck snagging any trout … until 5 pm, or so. Andrew was trolling a gold Repala on a light weight rod with four-pound test line when his lure appeared to get stuck. He yanked hard to free the lure, then his drag started to scream and he felt a fish – a really big fish – take off for the middle of the lake.

After a struggle that lasted about five minutes, Andrew landed his dream fish – a 23-inch, eight-pound Rainbow trout!

Andrew, 12, is a Reed Intermediate School student. He has been fishing with his dad since he was two years old and has won a few trout fishing tournaments in the past. But he has never caught a trout like this.

Like any good fisherman, Andrew can’t tell you where he caught his fish. But now Andrew can give some words of advice that he hears from his dad all the time – “We don’t call it catching, we call it fishing. Never give up – you never know what’s going to happen as long as there’s a line in the water!”
