Hearing On Health District Budget

A public hearing on the Newtown Health District's proposed 1998-99 budget will

be held Wednesday, March 11, at 7:30 pm in the Borough of Newtown office on

the lower level of Town Hall South.

The proposed $327,723 budget is up $7,280, or about 2.3 percent more than the

current budget, mostly due to increases in salaries for the health district

personnel. Based on anticipated revenues, the budget will require about a

three percent increase in the local contribution by taxpayers in the Town of

Newtown and the Borough of Newtown, the first increase in three years.

The salary account is $222,686, an increase of $18,211, due mostly to changes

in personnel and job classification. Health district personnel received an

average 2.7 percent salary increase last year.

Operating expenses are projected at $11,260, approximately the same as last

year. Contractual services will be decreased from $11,592 to $7,592 because of

a reduction in state aid.

Other budget items include transportation, $14,015; employee health insurance,

$41,608; legal/financial, $6,850; contingency, $2,000; employee Social

Security, $16,960.

Anticipated revenues include a state per capita block grant of $32,348 and a

block grant of $3,592, both approximately the same as last year. The district

projects $53,881 in fees, a significant increase over the $44,038 projected

for the current budget.

The local contribution under the proposed budget is $205,564 for the town and

$19,488 for the borough; previously the revenues were $199,607 and $18,143.

Per capita health costs will be an estimated $10.73. Two years ago, under the

1996-97 budget, the per capita cost was $10.45.

Copies of the proposed budget are on file in the office of the Newtown Health

District, Canaan House, on the Fairfield Hills campus, 4 Fairfield Circle

South.
