The mechanism for replacing elected officials mid-term begins with the respective party's local town committee submitting endorsements for consideration. The full process is outlined in the Newtown Charter: Sec 2-31 - a vacancy or vacancies shall be filled as follows:
(1) Within 30 days of vacancy, by a majority vote of the remaining members of the Town Body.
(2) From 31 to 60 days of vacancy, by appointment of the First Selectman with the approval of the Board of Selectmen.
(3) Should the number of vacancies leave less than a majority of the membership, the First Selectman with the approval of the Board of Selectmen, within 30 days, shall fill all existing vacancies.
Well, speaking as a former adolescent boy, I am not sure that works. I don't think my parents wanted me reading it but I knew where to get a Playboy, Penthouse or Hustler. ( And whose dad's kept beer in a refrigerator in the garage !)
Tough to tell if the irony in this letter is intentional or not. "It is important to remember that America stands for freedom of expression and the right to hold different beliefs." Unless those thoughts or beliefs are at odds with the the Democratic party. Lets not forget, it was GOP BOE Member Kuzma's suggested resolution (i.e., allowing the books to say, but with an opt-out mechanism for parents) that ultimately was the compromise adopted by the BOE.
Dan Grossman, I was hoping to see an apology from you, but instead you wrote a letter laced with hypocrisy. Maybe you don't realize what you did at the June 1 BOE meeting, I will give you the benefit of the doubt. Please read "Kudos Newtown: The Sequel" for a perspective on your behavior that hopefully will encourage you to write that apology.
Your Newtown neighbor,
Brendan Lukaniec
